The LCM, or Lawn Chair Mafia, is a New Jersey based Nerf group established in December 2000 by Mantis and to a lesser extent The Infinite Shindig. Composed of friends and relatives, the group grew from humble beginnings (backyard games, indoor wars, and basement skirmishes) into one of the better-known groups or “clans” in the Nerf community. Following the winter of 2000, the LCM began to Nerf exclusively outdoors. They held their first event in July 2001. To the east coast community, the event is notable because it is considered the first serious east coast gathering of its kind, one that included the LCM and The Horsemen.
The LCM Nerfed consistently through the next year or so, holding smaller gatherings and gaining members accordingly. In August 2002, the LCM put itself and east coast Nerf on the map by holding the largest east coast war in the history of the community (prior to 2007); 28 total attendees. The event, Apoc (short for “Apocalypse”), has become an annual August event, held in New Jersey the first weekend of the month. On 4 August 2007, the sixth annual Apoc had a recorded headcount of 48 Nerfers.
Following this success was the establishment of an annual winter war, Reckoning. Reckoning too would become a January fixture of the east coast Nerf calendar. Both events have gone uninterrupted (to date) and are held near the Jersey shore. These events and others are most often organized by The Infinite Shindig and/or Evil.
Regarded as one of the best-organized clans of either coast, or in between, the LCM has offered the Nerf community some of the most frequent, consistent and well-organized events. In terms of experience the LCM boasts some of the community’s most recognizable and talented members. The LCM has also played a major role in the online Nerf community, by helping Spanky (webmaster of NHQ) to build a membership core and early moderation and administrative team. The original NHQ M&A staff was almost exclusively LCM.
Ultimately the LCM’s contributions to the community include some considerable accomplishments. Since their inception, they have been the most active New Jersey Nerf clan. They host and organize the flagship events of the east coast; Apocalypse and Reckoning. Online, members of the LCM have been instrumental in the administrative teams of the hobby’s major websites, NerfHaven and NHQ. Since 2000 they have helped to define, with other notable groups, what is expected of a Nerf clan both in terms of organization and performance.
